LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY On Saturday, September 21st, Morgan Outdoors will host a photography exhibit titled Raptors Through The Lens, by local photographer Jerry Cohen, at 46 Main Street, Livingston Manor, NY. The theme of the exhibit, which runs through October 14th. is birds of prey – hawks, eagles, owls, osprey and falcons. “I would describe my work as capturing what is obviously there, but not obviously seen”, said Cohen. “My photographs capture a moment in time, giving us an opportunity to perceive it as we can not in real time.”
Most of the photographs were taken in Sullivan County. “Raptors – hawks, eagles, owls, osprey and falcons are just about everywhere, although not always easy to find. Eagles migrate here in the winter months to escape the freezing waters of Canada. One of the largest migrations is to the Rio and Mongaup Reservoir system in and near Forestburg, where they find open water to feed all winter. Other great spots in the county include the Delaware River corridor, Basherkill, and Neversink Reservoir,” said Cohen. “I shoot with a digital SLR camera and a 400mm lens, sometimes with a 1.4 converter, increasing it to 560 mm. Growing up, I used to hunt, and that skill has enabled me track them through the lens and to get those fast moving shots. Now I can shoot them over and over: they stay alive and I get the pictures. I think it’s a fair deal all the way around, and many others get to see their beauty in their natural surroundings.”
The limited edition framed prints in Raptors Though The Lenswill be offered for sale during the exhibition. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Delaware Valley Raptor Center, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation and conservation of birds of prey.
The exhibition coincides with Livingston Manor’s second annual Bird of Prey Day on Saturday, September 21 from 10 am to 3 pm at the Livingston Manor Central School grounds, where the public is invited to get close to these wild and powerful birds of prey. Highlights include presentations by Bill Streeter from the Delaware Valley Raptor Center and Ellen Kalish, Raptor Rehabilitator, with a variety of eagles, owls, hawks, and falcons. Master Falconer Eric Swanson will be free flying several birds of prey.
