Livingston Manor Half Marathon & 5K. Set in the Catskill Mountains, in the charming hamlet of Livingston Manor, NY, these courses will be fast and full of beautiful, autumn scenery! We are super excited to have Catskill Brewery as the featured craft brewery for this event!! This is one of our favorite breweries and they create delicious craft beer of many varieties. Catskill Brewery will give each participant, of legal drinking age, a complimentary Craft Beer! The Half Marathon course is fast (overall downhill course — see map)!! 400 PARTICIPANT LIMIT FOR THE HALF MARATHON. The course is one of the most scenic, point-to-point routes in the region, starting in Mongaup Pond Campground, following Mongaup Creek, the famous Willowemoc Creek, and finishing at Catskill Brewery. Runners should get the full experience of autumn colors in the Catskills! The 5K Run/Walk is a loop which starts by Catskill Brewery, crosses the historic Covered Bridge, follows the Willowemoc Creek through Livingston Manor, then down Main Street, with all the shops/restaurants, and back to the finish at Catskill Brewery. Finish line festivities will include food for participants wearing their race bibs, music, lawn games, and of course, craft beer from Catskill Brewery! On Saturday, August 4th, an exciting new exhibition “Streams – art in motion” opens at Morgan Outdoors in Livingston Manor highlighting the many wonders of the upper Delaware River watershed. The public is invited to the Opening Reception from 1:00 to 3:00pm. An 8 x 8-foot mural by local artist Robyn Almquist illustrates the Delaware River’s journey from the headwaters to the Atlantic Ocean, highlighting two key tributaries in our backyard, Willowemoc Creek and the Beaverkill. The mural uses visual art as a means to create awareness of our watershed. It is also interactive, making it fun and memorable for all ages!
Stunning sculptures by Naomi Teppich will bring the biota of the river and tributaries into the exhibition room. Organic wood slabs with mounted ceramic lichen pieces will hang above cast cement mushrooms installed along the floor. Naomi will also lead two outings along tributaries in the Livingston Manor area and discuss her inspiration from the natural beauty of these environments to create her sculpture.
Two “Local Topo” workshops are planned during the exhibition, one for children and one for adults. They will combine outdoor and indoor activities to teach the basics of topography and map-reading. This lost art is not only tremendously useful but lots of fun!
Several public presentations are also planned– featuring treasures of the headwaters: the walks and writings of John Burroughs; Artists who fished the Catskills; and a look at a special First-growth Forest. A full calendar of events and an exhibition poster will be available on August 4th.
This project is made possible in part with funding from a Sullivan County Arts and Heritage grant, funded by the Sullivan County Legislature and administered by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance.
