Safe Hunting Tips

Careless actions become sudden accidents in the woods. Hunter education efforts, including these rules, can help ensure the sportsman's collective safety.

Bring along a compass and topo map
Be prepared for changing weather
If lost build a large smoky fire. Stay calm and stay put and wait to be found
Treat every gun as if it is loaded. Make sure the safety is on before handling the weapon.
Never hunt alone; tell someone else where you're going and when you plan to return. Call if your plans change.
Wear hunter orange (you can wear more than is legally required).
Never point a gun at someone else (or even in someone's general direction). Control the direction of the muzzle at all times.
Know your target and what is beyond it before you take a shot.
Keep guns unloaded and your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
Never climb into a tree stand or shooting house with a loaded gun.
Avoid use of alcohol or drugs before or during hunting trips.
Become well-versed in the safety features and functions of your hunting firearm.
Unload guns before storing them; make sure children cannot access guns or ammunition.
Use the proper type and caliber ammunition in your gun (use care if you hunt with several different guns).
Look out for twigs, branches, vines and other potential trigger-snags when stalk-hunting.
Never jump ditches or climb fences while holding a gun (instead, pass the weapon over to a buddy after safely crossing or climbing).
Never take a shot while standing behind someone.
Wear suitable eye and ear protection when practicing or as needed.
Make sure barrels and actions are clean and free of blockages or obstructions.
Practice regular gun maintenance.
Take emergency gear on every trip - and know how to use it. Cellular phones and GPS receivers are also recommended.
Know the area you will be hunting (mark trails).
Wear a safety harness when climbing or hunting from a tree stand.
